Ever since the internet soared to popularity in the late eighties, many people have dreamed of working from home, which is not surprising at all. Who wouldn’t want to give up their blue collar job for the chance of being at home with their family and earning a living at the same time? Or if you wish working sitting by the pool in one of the Caribbean Island with your lap top and a Margarita? It does sound rather appealing, so let’s talk about the ins and outs of starting your online business.
The freedom of the “rat race” like everything worth has its price… the first days aren’t easy… The first thing to consider is whether or not you actually know anything about starting a business. This is not to insult your intelligence by any means, but it is rather to determine if you know what you are getting yourself into.
Starting an online business has many similarities to opening a physical business. We are not going in depth on opening a business but – public relations, networking, you need to find out about the regulation on your country, ability to file your own taxes, separated bank accounts, keep an eye open for a good accountant, how is your budget? Got the hint??
You’ll need to have knowledge of the internet: what do you know about internet marketing? Where can you find information? What is our computer literacy or skills level? Do you understand the jargons or terminology – the lingo – of the industry? Do you know people who can help you with that? Those are few things you have to think are the assets and skills you are bringing to the table? Can you partner with someone with complimentary skills?
Research – no it’s not a dirty word, it’s a good place to start. This is something that you must do, not only often but always. The Online industry is constantly changing that you must keep on top of your game. Chose what segment of the industry you would like to attack, then start gaining knowledge about it. Remember that there is never enough knowledge, and you must get as much as you can. Go to seminars, read books, go to conventions. Speak with others who are in the same field as you and get full on networking and learn from advice people have to offer. Sign up to the ezines related to your field, go to webinars, and visit forums: if you are just starting out, you will need all the advice you can get.
In addition to your research, learn the does and donts of the industry. Every field, as you should know has its rules. Make sure you understand about – e.g. copyright, fresh and duplicate content, how the search engines work, and more. Check to see what others are doing: you don’t want to reinvent the wheel; plus you want to be penalized by the Search Engines and not even know why (so you do not repeat the mistake).
When you first start your online business there will be a lot of work to do. You might have heard it is relatively easy to get started? Well, how easy was it when you started walking? Not easy hein? How about now? You can do it with your eyes closed… it took its time. But remember the reason why you want to start it in the first place as well as the “pot of gold in the end of the rainbow”.
The secret is: be realist, recognize your weaknesses, gain knowledge and don’t stress. Every start is difficult but as soon as you get it, you will be laughing and growing. Out there they say, “no pain, no gain” I say ” no pain GOOD”. However I would be kidding myself if I didn’t tell you that, like all in life, sometimes online business is a pain in the… neck.”
